If you love textiles we have a treat for you There's a Baluchar exhibition in town which you NEED to go for

Weavers Studio Resource Centre, in collaboration with the National Museum, New Delhi has come together to showcase a collection of never-seen-before Baluchar textiles from February 8 to March 20, 2019 at the National Museum on Janpath entitled 'Baluchars The Woven Narrative Silks of Bengal'.

Some may ask, 'what is a Baluchar'

Well, Baluchar is the one of the finest textile traditions in the history of India. It comprises of beautifully woven pictorial silk sarees from Bengal with its tradition dating back to the 18th century. The motifs of the Baluchar saris depict a fascinating tale of tradition and change while documenting events and the lifestyle of a bygone era. This 300-year-old weaving tradition, known for its unique pictorial representation inspired by the prevailing socio-cultural and artistic conditions, began in the Nawabi centre of Murshidabad. Over time, this art form disappeared only to be revived in Bishnupur and Varanasi.

This exhibition will showcase collections from the National Museum, the Weavers Studio Resource Centre (WSRC), the Crafts Museum as well as textiles from prominent private collectors. This exhibition will also see a host of curated walk-throughs.

Also, if that isn't enough, a book titled 'Baluchars The Woven Narrative Silks of Bengal' has also been launched that traces the origins and the state of the art today. It has been edited by Jasleen Dhamija and published by Niyogi Books.
