Abu Dhabi's cultural ambitions are getting a new address. Construction has officially begun on Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi (House of the Arts), a major performing arts institution on Saadiyat Island that is expected to open in 2030. Conceived as one of the Middle East's most technologically advanced performance venues, the project marks another significant addition to the emirate's rapidly expanding cultural landscape, reinforcing its long-term investment in the arts, creativity and cultural tourism.

When completed, Dar al Funoon will become a permanent home for opera, ballet, theatre, jazz and a wide range of live performances. More than simply another theatre complex, the institution has been envisioned as a year-round cultural destination, offering performances, artistic residencies, educational programmes and international collaborations throughout the year. Its launch comes as Abu Dhabi continues to position itself as a global cultural capital, with Saadiyat Island emerging as the focal point of that vision.

A Cultural Landmark

Located beside the Saadiyat Cultural District, Dar al Funoon will join an already impressive collection of institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Together, these projects have transformed the island into one of the world's fastest-growing cultural precincts.

Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the new arts institution has been designed by the late Frank Gehry, the internationally celebrated architect behind iconic buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the under-construction Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. True to Gehry's signature style, the building has been imagined with flowing, fabric-like forms that appear to drape over the structure. Transparent façades are intended to blur the boundary between the public and the performance spaces, inviting visitors into the artistic experience rather than simply presenting it behind closed doors.

The project represents one of Abu Dhabi's biggest investments in cultural infrastructure in recent years and reflects a broader strategy of pairing landmark architecture with world-class artistic programming.

Designed For Performance

Dar al Funoon has been planned as a venue that can accommodate performances of every scale. At its heart will be a multipurpose performance hall with seating for more than 2,000 people. Complementing it will be a 3,500-seat open-air amphitheatre designed for large-scale productions under the sky, alongside a more intimate 400-seat studio theatre and a dedicated 250-seat jazz venue. Altogether, the complex will have the capacity to host more than 6,000 guests across its various performance spaces.

Rather than operating as an event venue that comes alive only during festivals, the institution is expected to host programming every day of the year. Audiences can look forward to a calendar of opera productions, orchestral concerts, ballet performances, theatrical productions, contemporary music, jazz, experimental works and multidisciplinary arts events spread across 365 days.

The venue is also expected to become a platform for artistic residencies, touring productions and international co-productions. Alongside welcoming globally renowned performers and companies, it aims to create opportunities for emerging artists from the UAE and the wider region to collaborate with leading names in the performing arts.

Beyond The Stage

Dar al Funoon arrives at a time when Abu Dhabi has been steadily strengthening its credentials as a cultural destination. The emirate was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Music and has, over the years, expanded its performing arts ecosystem through initiatives such as Berklee Abu Dhabi, the Bait Al Oud music academy, the annual Abu Dhabi Festival and its hosting of International Jazz Day in 2025.

The addition of a permanent, world-class performing arts institution builds on these foundations while broadening the city's appeal to international audiences. Beyond its artistic ambitions, the project is also expected to contribute to Abu Dhabi's wider economic and tourism goals. Authorities anticipate it will generate employment, nurture local creative talent, encourage international cultural exchange and strengthen the emirate's creative economy as a driver of long-term growth.

As construction gets underway, Dar al Funoon signals the next chapter in Saadiyat Island's evolution from a museum district into a comprehensive cultural destination where visual art, architecture, music, theatre and performance exist side by side. By the time its doors open in 2030, the House of the Arts is expected to become not only a venue for performances but also a space where artists, audiences and ideas from around the world come together, further cementing Abu Dhabi's place on the global cultural map.
