It seems Indian wanderlust has found a new European favourite, and Germany is enjoying the spotlight. From heritage-packed cities to scenic landscapes and contemporary culture, the country is striking the right chord with Indian travellers, and the numbers are proof. Between January and July 2025 alone, India contributed over 520,000 overnight stays in Germany, cementing its position among the top three European destinations for Indians. Whether for leisure or business, the appeal of “Destination Germany” has rarely been stronger.
One of the key drivers behind this impressive surge is improved connectivity. The number of flights between India and Germany rose sharply, 26 per cent higher in 2024 compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels—and continues its upward trajectory in 2025. In fact, arrivals from India registered a 5.5 per cent increase between January and July this year compared to the same period last year. Clearly, more flights mean more Indians exploring Germany’s charms.
The economic impact tells its own story. Indian travellers contributed a total turnover of EUR 1.1 billion in 2024, with average spending pegged at EUR 3,068 per trip. This isn’t just about footfalls, it’s about value. “India is, without a doubt, a crucial market for Destination Germany,” said Romit Theophilus, Director, Marketing & Sales Office – India, GNTO. “The year-on-year growth and the pace of recovery we are witnessing are extremely encouraging. This is a clear signal that Germany's blend of historic cities, breathtaking nature, and vibrant culture is resonating with Indian travellers.”
Looking ahead, the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) is planning campaigns tailored to keep this momentum alive. Instead of limiting the focus to familiar tourist spots, the spotlight will shift towards hidden treasures and lesser-known destinations across Germany. A particularly eye-catching initiative will feature Indian celebrities travelling through the country, discovering and filming its authentic experiences—from rich history and art to natural wonders.
The idea is simple yet powerful: show Indians the Germany that lies beyond the brochures, and let them imagine themselves in those moments. These campaigns, coupled with strengthened air connectivity, are expected to give Germany an even firmer hold on the Indian market.
Since its inception in 2011, the GNTO India office in New Delhi has played a crucial role in bringing Germany closer to Indian travellers. Represented by Airplus Travel Services Pvt Ltd, the office has consistently worked on strategies to build awareness and enhance Germany’s image as a destination. Globally, the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) operates out of Frankfurt with 19 representative offices across key markets. It works under the aegis of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, focusing on raising the profile of “Germany–Simply Inspiring” while supporting the largely small and medium-sized German travel industry.
By combining sharp market research, innovative campaigns, and a strong digital push, Germany is ensuring that its bond with India grows stronger with every passing year. And for Indian travellers seeking a blend of history, culture, and modernity, Germany might just be the European holiday they didn’t know they were missing.
