Think beach, and you'd think of golden sand being washed over by foamy blue waves as the sun shines brightly. But that image may not always hold true, especially when you set foot on these four unique black sand beaches along India's west coast. Yes, they are not just in Iceland!

Located in the Uttara Kannada district, roughly 435 km via road from Bangalore, Tilmati Beach in Karwar is a favourite among tourists for its striking beauty. The black sesame-like sand, after which the beach is named (til meaning "sesame seeds" and mati meaning "soil"), stands out to everybody who visits. The black colour of the sand is considered its natural and authentic character as many basaltic rocks surround it. The best way to take in its beauty is by spending some quiet time with your close ones during sunset or sunrise.
