The Asian Koel is known for the male’s distinctive “koo-ooo” call. Males are glossy black with red eyes, while females are brown with white spots. They often lay their eggs in crows’ nests.
This bright yellow bird with black wings is commonly seen in forests and open woodlands. It migrates from regions including Africa and Europe and is known for its fluty whistle.
Often spotted near water bodies, this bird is a colourful green bird with a striking blue tail. It catches bees and dragonflies in flight and removes their stings before eating them.
Easily identified by the adult male’s long, ribbon-like tail, the Indian Paradise Flycatcher arrives in summer to breed in wooded areas and is considered one of India’s most elegant birds.
The Jacobin Cuckoo is a black-and-white bird with a prominent crest. Arriving from Africa before the monsoon, it is known as the Chatak and is often seen in parks and semi-forested areas.
Nicknamed the “nine-coloured bird,” the Indian Pitta has shades of blue, green and orange and a short tail. It breeds in the Himalayas and moves to central and southern India during summer.
Active mainly at dusk, the Black-crowned Night Heron is a stocky bird with a black cap, grey body and red eyes. Many migrate to the Indian subcontinent between March and May.
Known locally as the Neelkanth, the Indian Roller is famous for its brilliant blue wings, which are most visible in flight. It is often seen perched on roadside wires and open fields during summer.
