Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus)

Thrive near lakes and rivers in Periyar. Often seen bathing or foraging; herds gather especially in dry months. A symbol of the reserve’s identity.

Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris)

A protected apex predator in Periyar’s dense forests. Roughly 40 tigers estimated. Elusive, mostly seen via tracks or distant sightings.

Indian Gaur (Bos gaurus)

The largest wild cattle in India. Strongly built, grazing in grasslands and forest edges. Common yet impressive.
